Well here we are in the 21st century and, excluding the horse and cart, the toboggan, the narrow boat, the roller skate and the bicycle, there isn't a fat lot of choice really. Here's the low down on our impartial advice. If we had a car that would run on fresh air, be assured we would sell them.
Firstly Biodiesel. Richard Lewis, the owner of the company this last 30 years has looked long and hard at Biodiesel. Reclaimed oil has merit, the recycling of used vegetable oil, although by its nature it's a limited opportunity as there isn't limitless amounts of cooking oil to recycle.
The production of virgin biodiesel has limited use. Biodiesel is a blend of mineral oil and vegetable oil, the higher the percentage of vegetable oil then the more likely it is that your modern computer run engine management system will think there's a problem. The biodiesel that you buy on the garage forecourt these days has a maximum blend of 5% vegetable oil. Bio? Eco friendly? 95% fossil fuel 5% veg, are you happy with that? Besides, the debate about whether it is right to devote massive amounts of farmland to producing it when people are going hungry is raging. Energy isn't just a UK problem it's global.
Electric Hybrids, yes, these are available in limited numbers, they enjoy reduced emissions because they spend some time running on a battery that the petrol engine has charged up. Clever idea, Honda and Toyota are the main companies involved and we stock used examples of these cars.
Hydrogen, Yup, it's the future, George Bush has chucked two billion dollars towards hydrogen vehicle research and Arnold Schwarzenegger is trying to get 200 hydrogen filling stations built by the end of 2010 in California, USA. Not particularly handy for readers of this website I'd wager.
Then of course there are the "Power Your Car With TapWater" kits available from Ebay and car boot sales for about £200. Sorry, we can't recommend them.
And then there's LPG. It's a waste product. There's plenty of it, it burns cleaner than Petrol and Diesel, it emits 20% less CO2, hardly any particulates no kryptonite (lucky for Superman), and its better for your engine. And theres one more important factor. It costs half as much as petrol. Here's a more detailed write up about LPG.
