This has been a major area of research for Richard, he leaves no stone unturned, as a result he decided that at this moment in time the way forward is with LPG because it reduces running costs, fuel consumption and vehicle excise liability. Choosing the right LPG system is equally important and that is what we specialise in. We have done the extensive research so that you can be sure of the choice we help you make.
Richard did fully explore other alternatives, here is what he discovered:
• LPG is a waste product put to excellent use. There is plenty of it, it burns cleaner than petrol or diesel and emits 20% less CO2, hardly any particulates no damaging Kryptonite and its better for your engine. It is completely safe and reduces fuel costs by up to 40%. We believe it to be the very best alternative at this time. There is also a good infrastructure in place now, so filling up is not a problem.
• Electric hybrids are very much put forward as the way ahead, and we believe they do have a value and a place, especially for people who do the majority of their driving in town where they run on a battery which the petrol engine has charged up. Honda and Toyota are the main producers and we do stock excellent used cars by both these manufacturers. (For those interested in such things it has to be said that they are not as carbon friendly in production as LPG vehicles).
• Biodiesel was a very tempting alternative. Reclaimed oil has merit, the recycling of used vegetable oil is a brilliant idea but there just isn’t enough of it around, nor is there an infrastructure to maintain it.
• The production of virgin biodiesel also presents problems not at first apparent. Biodiesel is a blend of mineral oil and vegetable oil, the higher percentage of the latter means that many of the modern computer run engine management systems do not accept it. The biodiesel currently sold on forecourts has a maximum bend of 5% vegetable oil; we do not consider this to be truly bio or eco friendly as 95% fossil fuel and 5% vegetable oil just doesn’t stack up as green. The production of the vegetable oil also brings into question the ethics in turning huge tracts of farmland globally over to its production, when food production in countries is and has to be a first priority. At this level it becomes a global issue raising much alarm and debate.
• Hydrogen cells keep popping into the news and are being trialled in a small way in the States where a great deal of money has been diverted into this research. As yet the jury is still out and so there is no infrastructure to support its use, nor is there likely to be in the near future. It is very expensive to install hydrogen cells. We continue to monitor this.
• Power your car with tap water kits available on EBay and car boot sales for about £200 are truly not a good idea we definitely would not recommend them. Maybe down the road such a wonderful option will become available and viable if so we will be the first to shout about it - but the time is not now.
For Richard Maggie and team finding ways to run cars in a climate and eco friendly way is of paramount concern, huge amounts of time and energy are spent in research to this end. We all want to be able to help you make the most informed decision – after all purchasing your car is the second biggest expense after house purchase – we also know that many people are now concerned about environmental issues and would like to turn to greener lifestyles.
